Mission Statement

P.E.A.R.L. Institute of New York is dedicated to the education, advocacy, research and dissemination of information that contributes to culturally competent social work practice and other human services programs serving the United States, Pacific Rim populations and beyond.


P.E.A.R.L. (Pacific, Education, Advocacy, Research, Learning) Institute of New York recognizes the recent rapid developments and opportunities in the field of social work profession in Pacific Rim countries. P.E.A.R.L Institute of New York is dedicated to bridge the Eastern, Western, Northern and Southern cultures, and to promote optimal policy and service to the Pacific Rim populations by develop mutually beneficial partnerships with overseas social work institutions, organizations and practitioners. Optimal outcomes will be achieved through a collaboration of process, by conducting research, education, training and advocacy projects. The cross-cultural concepts and models used to achieve these optimal outcomes may be adaptable to other populations beyond the Pacific Rim.

About Us

The institute, a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization in New York City, was established as a non-profit organization in San Diego, California in 1993 by a group of professionals with a strong commitment to address the social policy as well as human services needs of individuals and families from different cultural backgrounds within the Pacific Rim. After organizing local Asian community outreach programs, the institute has supported the Sino-American International Summer Training Program at San Diego State University's Department of Social Work since 1991. Since its establishment, the institute has conducted and promoted cross-cultural social work training and research to increase the awareness of the benefits and values of the integration of eastern and western, as well as social and behavioral health, services models. Since 1998, the institute has been supporting New York University (NYU) and became affiliated with Silver School of Social Work at NYU in 2014. In 2015, The institute reestablished its headquarters in New York City.
